The first members of the family to learn jjutsu were General Eliezer Valente and Dr. Syllo Valente. In the 1920s, a Japanese friend taught the brothers some fundamental self-defense skills. The Valentes enrolled right away after Carlos and Hélio Gracie established their renowned Academia Gracie in the heart of Rio de Janeiro in 1952.

Grandmaster Hélio Gracie began giving Pedro, Gui, and Joaquim special training when they were just two years old. The Valente brothers had regular instruction from Hélio, Royler, and Rolker Gracie at the Gracie Academy in Rio de Janeiro while they were growing up. Jjutsu was always something Pedro Sr. wanted his sons to learn as a complete fighting system.

According to the family website, “Joaquim Valente, the youngest of the Valente Brothers, relocated to Miami in 2007 to study criminology at Barry University.” According to a profile on LinkedIn ascribed to Joaquim, he attended Barry University from 2007 to 2011. Joaquim worked with Grand Master Helio Gracie when he was learning.
According to the website for the family, “Joaquim also obtained the Professors’ Diploma from Grandmaster Hélio Gracie in 2007.” With only 27 persons receiving this diploma from Grandmaster Hélio Gracie in 75 years, the brothers achieved a great deal, and it was an honour for them.
