The Uptons’ daughter, Kate, is the offspring of Shelley and Jeff. Her father, Jeffery, was the high school athletic director, and her mother Shelley had previously won the Texas state tennis championship.

After relocating to Melbourne, Florida, with her family in 1999, Upton enrolled in Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy.

She competed in national events when still a young rider and was a member of the American Paint Horse Association (APHA).

She and her horse Roanie won three APHA Reserve World Championships in the 13 and Under Western Riding, 13 and Under Horsemanship, and 14-18 Western Riding divisions. After adding the 13 and Under Reserve All-Around Championship, she now holds four reserve titles (2nd place). On the APHA young Top Twenty, Upton placed third overall.

With a second horse named Colby, she took first place in 14-18 Western Riding in 2009 and finished in the top 5 in 14-18 Horsemanship and 14-18 Western Pleasure.

Kate began her modelling career when she was 15 years old. In 2008, she signed her first contract for modelling with Elite Model Management. She did, however, sign up with IMG models after relocating to New York.

Later in 2011, she was featured with body paint for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. In the same year, Kate was also recognised as the SI Swimsuit Rookie of the Year. In April 2011, a video of Kate doing the Dougie dance after a Clippers game went viral online, further boosting her notoriety.
