Mescal was born in Maynooth, County Kildare, to Garda officer Dearbhla and semi-professional actor Paul.
He is the oldest of three children and he has a brother and a sister. He studied at the Maynooth Post Primary School. He belonged to the Maynooth GAA club and participated in minor and under-21 Gaelic football for Kildare.
He was forced to discontinue practising the sport because of a jaw injury.

After receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree, Mescal was given parts in two theatrical productions: Angela’s Ashes and The Great Gatsby. He chose to play the latter part and made his Gate Theatre debut in Dublin as Jay Gatsby.
He performed as the Prince in the same theater’s contemporary adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Red Shoes that same year. The Times’ Steve Cummins commended Mescal’s standout performance in the 2018 world premiere of Louise O’Neill’s play Asking for It at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin.
